They condemn demonetisation as a ‘mindles move’

The Congress and Communist parties organised anti-NDA protests in Belagavi on Wednesday, to mark the first anniversary of demonetisation.

While the CPI and CPI(M) jointly organised their protest, the Congress organised four different protests, by its various wings. Members of Left parties walked to the DC office and addressed protesters. Zaine Khan and others spoke. They submitted a memorandum to the government urging the Union government to take remedial measures to streamline the economy.

Lakshmi Hebbalkar, KPCC women’s wing president, led the rally from the party office on Club Road to the DC office. The protesters held a rasta roko for a few minutes. Ms. Hebbalkar said demonetisation had destroyed the livelihood of millions of working class families and the BJP had no moral right to celebrate ‘Vijayotsava’ on demonetisation anniversary.

K.V. Mohan, KPCC general secretary in charge of Belagavi district, strongly condemned BJP MLA Sanjay Patil for saying there was nothing wrong in “sending Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to Pakistan.” Mr Mohan urged the police to file a suo motu case against Mr. Patil and arrest him. He said the Congress would not file a case against him, but expected the administration to take action against leaders who abuse the Chief Minister.

Raju Sait, president of the urban unit, and others wore black dresses and walked past the Rani Channamma Circle, went to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum. Groups of supporters of Satish Jarkiholi, MLA, Ms Hebbalkar, and Youth Congress leader Vinay Navalagatti took out separate rallies. They called demonetisation a mindless move and said it had killed hundreds of poor people and took away their life’s savings.
