The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research, Inc. (LEITR) today announced the launch of One World Sight Alliance (OWSA) a global network that endeavors to eradicate preventable blindness by way of international tissue distribution, physician training and eye bank development.

“Through the formation of One World Sight Alliance, we’ve created an unparalleled global network of a growing number of more than 20 eye banks distributing about 15,000 corneas a year across the U.S. and around the world,” says Jason Woody, president and CEO, Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research. “Over the years, eye banks have demonstrated their ability to change industry practice and patient outcomes for the better. OWSA will apply its singular knowledge and experience to teach the global community best practices in eye banking and corneal transplant surgery with the ultimate goal of eliminating preventable blindness.”

OWSA offers the following services:

  • Tissue Distribution – OWSA offers the most comprehensive corneal tissue distribution website in the world that allows surgeons and institutions to quickly obtain the highest quality ocular tissue available for transplant and research.
  • Surgeon Training – OWSA’s surgical team trains surgeons around the world in the latest corneal transplant techniques, including Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK) for optimal patient and visual outcomes.
  • Eye Bank Development – From outreach to donor families, to timely recovery and distribution, to innovative surgical techniques, OWSA teaches community eye banks the most scientific and compassionate practices in the industry.
