Here's what Rahul Gandhi calls 'a tragedy' and 'PM’s thoughtless act'

NEW DELHI: On the one-year anniversary of demonetisation, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi described the decision as the "PM's thoughtless act" and one that is "a tragedy".

In a tweet, the Congress leader also said that millions of "lives and livelihoods were destroyed" due to last year's decision to scrap high-value currency notes.



Rahul tweeted a Hindi couplet that alluded to the "suffering" the poor went through as a result of demonetisation.

CPM leader Sitaram Yechury wondered what there was to celebrate.


The Aam Aadmi Party called the note ban a "betrayal of the nation".


Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee described demonetisation as "a big scam", adding that all it achieved is a "big, big zero."


Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad concurred with Banerjee saying nothing was gained by the note ban. Like Yechury, he too wondered what there was to celebrate.



Yesterday, former Prime Minister and Cambridge-trained economist Manmohan Singh lambasted the Modi government's decision+ to scrap high value notes. He called it a "complete disaster" for the country's economy.

"Tomorrow (November 8) we mark one year since the disastrous policy was thrust on the people of our country. Nowhere in the world has any nation taken such a drastic step that sweeped off 86 per cent of the currency," said Singh.

He reiterated what he said in Parliament after the note ban, calling it "organised loot & legalized plunder".
