Banerjee also said that the ruling party at centre is facing a 'moral defeat' in Gujrat and that is why all union ministers and the Prime Minister are rushing to Gujrat.
KOLKATA: As the state witnessed a high voltage drama over the protests and celebration programmes for demonetisation by Trinamool Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party respectively, Jayant Sinha, union minister of state for civil aviation challenged Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to prove demonetisation a scam with facts and figures.

Calling the day as a historic one, the former MoS for finance said that he was in Kolkata to challenge Mamata Banerjee with facts and establish demonetisation as a 'miracle' and not 'scam'.

"Bengal chief minister Mamata has been calling demonetisation a scam for long. I am here to challenge her with facts. It is not a scam but a miracle. It has taken us forward on the path of competitiveness," said Sinha in a programme in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Mamata Banerjee on the other hand called it a 'disaster'. "This government will not be in power forever. The truth will come out. It is already coming out. Farmers are dying. There is no job. But was demonetisation done in ignorance or was it a conspiracy? Only one party has benefited from it. That is the ruling party at the centre. Why should people of the country suffer because of a political decision?," she asked.

The chief minister further added, "I am a simple person and do not understand much. But, four renowned economists and an ex RBI governor were saying that demonetisation was wrong. Countries that tried demonetisation are all failed economies. These countries include Russia, Libya, Nigeria."

Reacting to Mamata's allegation, Sinha said, "Ease of doing corruption is going down steadily and ease of doing business is going up. We have created trust and transparency. One needs to have proper understanding of science and statistics for evaluating the impact of demonetisation. People who go on calling it a scam are ignorant of facts."

Banerjee however said that the ruling party at centre is facing a 'moral defeat' in Gujrat and that is why all union ministers and the Prime Minister are rushing to Gujrat. "Why the PM, and ministers are running to Gujrat all the time? There is no governance in the country. They are only concentrating on expansion. They have morally lost Gujarat and that is why they have taken away all central forces there."

Sinha on the contrary said that people understand the reason behind demonetisation and see its impact on black money. "Post demonetisation, we are getting answers from people. BJP has won in elections after elections. People's acceptance will also reflect in the results of Gujrat and Himachal Pradesh elections," added the union minister.

On the issue of fake currency notes, Sinha said, "The fake notes, we have been intercepting for last few months are of low quality. There are lot of researches going on to strengthen the currency. We are trying to introduce more sophisticated ink, paper and print material to make the currency one of most difficult currency to be counterfeited."

About the SMEs and MSMEs, that bore the brunt of demonetisation, Sinha said, "Following demonetisation, re-monetisation and e-monetisation also happened. We had tried to provide sufficient payment methods to the SMEs and MSMEs . Following demonetisation, the workers now get their wages in accounts and receive other benefits. Moreover, government's Mudra bank is there to help the small and medium industries.
