NEW DELHI: Government and opposition parties will come head-to-head on Wednesday in day-long celebrations and protests, respectively, to mark the first anniversary of demonetisation. On the one hand, while the government has said it will celebrate November 8 as anti-black money day and has scheduled a series of programmes with Union ministers in attendance, opposition parties (including the Left party leaders) on the other hand, will spread out across the country to observe the note ban anniversary as a 'black day' for the Indian economy.
On Wednesday, CPM leaders Brinda Karat and CPI national secretary D Raja, among others, will march from Mandi House to the Reserve Bank of India in New Delhi to protest against a "decision that had disastrous implications for the Indian economy."
Speaking to TOI, Raja said, "Each state unit of the party will hold protests to highlight the plight of the poor as a result of the government's unthinking, disastrous decision."
CPM leader Prakash Karat will be in Kerala on November 8, and said CPM units will hold protests in state capitals and district headquarters to harp on the economic fallout of the PM Modi's demonetisation decision, the resultant job losses and the deaths that occurred in the aftermath of the government's announcement.
The government and opposition also launched simultaneous social media campaigns a day prior to the anniversary of demonetisation.
On the one hand, while the government began putting out statistical data to show how the economy had improved and began popularising the hastag #DeMonWins, the Congress on the other hand, started an online campaign called #ThaliBajao against demonetisation in poll-bound Gujarat, where Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi will interact with textile traders on November 8, and also participate in a candlelight vigil.
On Twitter, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said, "What was the purpose of demonetisation? Modi kept changing goalposts but no aims have been achieved, except pushing economy into a tailspin. Modi changed aim from ending Terror & Black Money to promoting Digital. But he has failed even there, despite his ad for a private company."
Smaller parties like Lok Gathbandhan Party will also hold protests against the NDA government's "betrayal" of people and the "biggest economic disaster" orchestrated by the Modi government.
