City’s Integrations Traffic Management System or TRIMS has been recognised as a ‘commendable initiative’ by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The award was received by Municipal Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy at the valedictory session of the 10th Urban Mobility India conference on Monday. The city’s achievement was slotted under the ‘Best Intelligent Transport Project’ by the ministry. Other cities including Surat, Mysuru and Kochi were recognised with various other awards. The awards were given by Telangana IT and Municipal Administration Minister K.T. Rama Rao.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Rao said that solving problems on Indian roads requires administrators to go beyond copying western solutions. While lauding Hyderabad for winning the award, he said that a lot more needs to be done to ease traffic congestion in the city, including integrating all modes of commute. Talking about Hyderabad Metro Rail as a solution to some of the city’s traffic problems, he reiterated that the project was set for inauguration on November 28, likely by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Union Secretary for Housing and Urban Affairs D.S. Mishra said that the next UMI conference will be held at Nagpur in 2018.

He also pointed out that there was a need for considering newer mass transit means including metro rail and trams.
