Valparai residents led by P. Paramasivam, area secretary, Communist Party of India-Marxist, on Monday petitioned the district administration seeking streamlining of the bus service in the area. They said that most buses that the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation used were faulty, suffered break down often and troubled commuters.
The poorly maintained buses were also the reason for frequent accidents in the hills.
They added that the transport corporation diverted buses from the Valparai bus stand to various estates to other destinations inconveniencing workers.
‘Engage us in land acquisition’
Residents of G.K.R. Nagar, Chinniyampalayam, petitioned the district authorities asking the officials involved in acquiring land for expanding the Coimbatore airport to engage with them. In their petition, the residents said they had been living in blocks 9, 10, 16,17, and 18 that were to be acquired for expanding the airport. To date no official had met them.
They also want the district administration to classify the land to be acquired as agricultural, vacant, plots, houses and industries and engage with all the stakeholders.
The residents also said that any decision taken on their behalf, but without their involvement would not be binding on them.
Trust seeks permission
Aanma Charitable Trust sought permission from the district administration to distribute ‘nilavembu kashayam’ and create awareness among people on the spread of dengue. In its petition, the organisation said that in the course of its work in slums and pockets where the urban poor lived, people questioned its right to distribute the herbal medicine and sought to know if it had permission.
If the administration were to grant permission, it would help the organisation carry out its activities, the trust added.

Residents of Moonanadu village in Nilakottai near Pandalur petitioned the Collector on Monday urging the district administration to intervene and ensure that a stretch of road is laid near their village.
According to petitioners, they want a stretch of road from Kozhichal to Pannikkal, as the more than 50 families residing in the village, including tribals, have to walk more than a kilometre to get to a road where vehicles can ply.
The lack of roads has led to people dying while being rushed to hospital, the petitioners claimed.
Demand for basic infrastructure
Residents of Indira Nagar in Ketti Palada, Adhigaratty Panchayat, demanded basic infrastructure to be put up in their locality.
They claimed that the residents had no access to water, roads and streetlights.
The families had been living in Indira Nagar for over two decades, they said.
The residents appealed to the Collector to provide street lights and water connections as the residents often crossed paths with wild animals such as gaur during nights and also when going to collect water.
