The Judicial Magistrate Court II here on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking a fresh investigation in the case registered against former Minister for Power Natham R. Viswanathan by Dindigul police for allegedly cheating a businessman to the tune of ₹2.97 crore.

Defence counsel M. Kannappan said Judicial Magistrate M. Balamurugan accepted the facts submitted by Dindigul police for closing the case on the basis of “mistake of facts”. No concrete documentary evidence was produced on the alleged financial transactions and disbursal of cash to several people by the petitioner, he added. Mr. Viswanathan did not appear before the court on Tuesday evening.

The complainant, A. Sabapathy, a businessman, had claimed that he used to give money to various persons on the instruction of the former Minister, and get it reimbursed later ever since he got acquainted with Mr. Viswanathan.

He reportedly gave the money to several people during the last Lok Sabha election. But Mr. Viswanathan did not repay the money, the complainant had stated in his petition.
