Counting virtues of total prohibition, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today said the families which were "on verge of ruin" earlier under impact of alcohol are prospering now.

"Women, elderly, all are happy. Those families which were on the verge of ruin earlier under impact of alcohol are now prospering. Those who were earlier addicted to alcohol are also glad to have kicked the habit", he said after inaugurating and laying foundation stones of a nearly 200 buildings of police department.

Kumar highlighted the role played by the police in enforcing liquor ban imposed in the state since April last year, saying "if the officials stay vigilant, prohibition will be strictly complied with".

Underscoring his government's commitment to "rule of law", the Chief Minister said "the police, besides other wings of the government and the judiciary, have a very important role to play in this".

"Our government believes in neither protecting anybody nor implicating anyone. Anybody involved in a crime has to face action in accordance with the law of the land. This should also be the approach of the police", Kumar said.

"The government, on its part, will provide all necessary assistance to the police, be it regarding funds, vehicles, weapons or uniforms", he said.

The Chief Minister also issued directions for expeditious completion of a Police Academy at Rajgir in Nalanda district, calling it his "dream project".

The function was held at the Chief Minister's secretariat where a number of top officials including Bihar DGP P K Thakur, Principal Secretary (Home) Amir Subhani and the CM's Principal Secretary Chanchal Kumar were also present.
