JAIPUR: In-service doctors -those under the directorate of public health-went on an indefinite strike on Monday, hitting health services across the state, especially at district hospitals and those in rural areas.
There seems no immediate end to the suffering of the public as both the government and striking doctors stood their ground. No talks were held on Monday to resolve the deadlock. The government had invoked the Rajasthan Essential Service Maintenance Act (RESMA) to deal with striking doctors.
In another development, the Jaipur Association of Resident Doctors (JARD) came out in support of their striking brethren. "If the government adopts a policy of repression to deal with striking doctors, the resident doctors would be compelled to join forces with them," said JARD in a statement.
According to the medical and health department, around 3,800 doctors failed to report for duty after sending mass resignations to the directorate of public health. Talks between the state government and doctors had broken down in the wee hours of Monday.
The medical and health department clarified that there was no provision for 'mass resignations' and the department cannot accept these 'resignations'. "Only individually submitted resignations can be considered," said an official.
