Congress plans to hit out at BJP in poll-bound Gujarat with a new video campaign that accuses the ruling party of “ruining businesses” and “breaking the trust of Gujaratis by playing with the economy”.

Titled ‘Dil Thi Paako Gujarati (true Gujarati by heart)’, Congress campaign is a response to the Gujarat BJP’s video campaign released last week that hailed Modi as a relentless nation builder and the only leader capable of combating corruption.

The new Congress campaign seeks to present the erstwhile UPA regime as “the government that spoke less but delivered on all fronts”, and refers to the party vice-president as a leader who for the “past 10 years has been working closely with people”.

Shot in a barber’s shop, the new Congress campaign is similar to the BJP’s, with a man interrupting the conversation of two young men who praise PM Modi for doing what none of his predecessors could, in just three years. Addressing the two youngsters, the man says that UPA’s was “a government that spoke less but worked hard to make the country’s economy strong and solid, while the BJP is interested only in social media live events”.

“It was in that great condition that the Congress handed over the country to BJP and look what they have done to the economy,” the man in the video laments, hitting out at the BJP’s moves such as demonetisation and its implementation of GST. The video claims that Congress is responsible for the strides made by Gujarat, saying that the party had built “40 airports, highways and over 200 dams but did not take credit for them”.

The campaign video says it was the efficient and impartial running of the Congress government that gave the Gujaratis electricity and other benefits that they enjoy now. It takes a potshot at those who give PM Modi credit for unprecedented development, saying it was not as if “there was no gas in households or cars on Indian roads before 2014”. “Going by what you say, probably even the iPhone came after 2014. Maybe BJP gave us freedom too,” the man in the video says sarcastically, and asks whether corruption has ended or terrorist attacks stopped after demonetisation.

Both Congress and BJP are seeking to woo under-35 voters who account for 65% of the electorate in the state. Activist Hardik Patel’s team is also targeting BJP with an aggressive video campaign aimed at garnering the support of younger voters. The protagonist in the Congress video had interestingly acted earlier in the series made by BJP in 2012 that said the Centre was discriminating against Gujarat.
