NEW DELHI: On the lines of Gujarat, the Yogi Adityanath government has decided to hold over 1700 ‘Pashu Arogya Melas’ (Animal Health Fairs) across the state till next March to treat its burgeoning population of cows and buffalos. UP will do this in the name of RSS ideologue Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, prefixing his name to the fairs.

The state has nearly 2.05 Cr cows and 3.06 Cr buffaloes and is the biggest producer of milk in the country. “But this record milk production is mainly due to buffaloes,” the state government said in a recent letter to all districts, communicating the decision to hold the animal health fairs. It has been proposed that a more scientific artificial insemination programme for cows will now be provided to farmers “at their doorstep” through the fairs. Also, an increase in cow and buffalo population is envisioned for increasing the milk production of the state by at least 10%.

The fairs will treat cows and buffalos which are not producing milk anymore due to being inflicted by disease. The letter said UP is adopting the Gujarat model to hold such animal fairs in the state. All such animal fairs would be video-graphed by the state government, the letter adds.

Each such fair is expected to be inaugurated by a state minister or local Member of Parliament and farmers will be encouraged to bring their cattle to these fairs where arrangements will be made for their drinking water and shelter for a day. A special control room is being set up to coordinate these fairs across the state.

A week before every fair, the government will also do a survey of all livestock in the particular area and publicity will done for the upcoming fair. Government veterinary doctors will be present at these day-long fairs for treating the cattle, goats and educate farmers on how to prevent their animals from being inflicted with diseases and other ailments. The UP government is aiming at holding nearly 450 such fairs in November, 300 in December, 375 in January, 300 in February and another 300 in March next year.

All medical services provided at the animal fairs would be free-of-cost, the state government says.
