Coimbatore: 'Earn while you learn' is a beautiful concept, but four students of a city college took a lopsided view of this. They kidnapped the son of a businessman and demanded Rs 5 lakh as ransom. The quartet has been put behind bars, along with two accomplices.
They were identified as K Aravindh from Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district, E Gokul of Srinivasa Nagar at Kovilpatti, R Rajamanickam of Erode and K Manikandan of Madurai, third year BE Mechanical Engineering students at KGiSL Institute of Technology in Saravanampatty.
Police have also arrested P Muruganandam of Periyakulam in Theni and R Sudhakar of Periyakulam, who was working in an IT firm in Bengaluru.
They had kidnapped 21-year-old M Gnanananthan, son of a city-based businessman, police sources said. "Gnanananthan was a final year BCom student at Hindustan Arts and Science College in Nava India. His father N Manoharan of Peelamedupudur was engaged in real estate and edible oil businesses. Along with his studies, Gnanananthan was also working as a small-time gold dealer," a police officer said.
Gnanananthan was a friend of Rajamanickam. "Rajamanickam, who wanted to involve in gold business part-time, sought help from his friend. Rajamanickam told Gnanananthan that his friend Manickandan's father wanted to buy 120grams of gold and asked him to provide details of a seller. Gnanananthan allegedly gave him the details of Periyasamy of Erode, who sold the gold to Rajamanickam for Rs 2.5 lakh. Rajamanickam later came to know that it was fake gold and decided to get back the money from Gnanananthan," the officer told TOI.
On November 3, a friends of Rajamanickam requested Gnanananthan to meet him near L&T Bypass Road to discuss a business matter. "When he visited the spot, the six-member gang kidnapped him. They kept him in an isolated place. Gnanananthan was also severely beaten by the gang members. One of the gang members contacted Manoharan on November 4 and asked him to arrange Rs 5 lakh as ransom to release his son. The father immediately approached police. We picked up Gnanananthan's friend Kalaiselvan of Erode, who gave details about the gang. Police arranged money and gave it to Manoharan, who was waiting to handover the amount to the gang members near L&T Bypass Road. But, the gang, detecting the presence of police personnel, did not come there to receive the money. A police team led by Peelamedu police (law&order) inspector V Selvaraj traced the whereabouts of the gang members, surrounded the place and rescued the college student," the officer added.
Gnanananthan, who had sustained severe injuries on his face and body, was admitted at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.
Peelamedu police have registered a case against the six-member gang under Sections 147, 148, 323, 324, 365 and 506(ii) of the IPC.
