Ittefaq vs Thor Ragnarok box office: Chris Hemsworth beats Sidharth Malhotra-Sonakshi Sinha starrer

While the Indian box office is used to seeing two Bollywood films releasing on the same date, this weekend was a little different. Sidharth Malhotra and Sonakshi Sinha starrer Ittefaq hit the theatres almost single-handedly on November 3 (the other one being small budget film Ribbon) but little did fans know that it will face tough competition from Marvel's superhero film, Thor: Ragnarok, which released in India on the same date. And what is even more surprising is that Thor has by far won the box office race till now. Thor's first weekend collection stands at Rs 27.66 crore while Ittefaq earned Rs 16.05 crore till Sunday.

Talking about their opening figures, Thor: Ragnarok earned a phenomenal Rs 7.77 crore making it one of the highest Hollywood opener in India. While Ittefaq had a slow start collecting Rs 4.05 crore in its kitty on Friday. A major reason for the same is the fact that the Ittefaq team followed a strict no-marketing policy for promoting the film. In an age where promotions are such an important part of a movie's process, such a move could turn out to be a really taxing one for the project.

Coming to Saturday, the two films maintained the same pace. Thor: Ragnarok minted Rs 9.43 crore showing a growth of more than 20 percent, Ittefaq stayed at Rs 5.50 crore with a growth of more than 35 percent, but a figure too less from Thor's.

While Sunday saw Thor: Ragnarok's thunderous stay at the box office with even more gusto when it raked in a total of Rs 10.46 crore. In comparison, Ittefaq collected Rs 6.50 crore, maintaining its steady growth.

In total, Thor: Ragnarok's collection is now at Rs 27.66 crore, while Ittefaq is staggering behind at Rs 16.05, 40 percent less than Thor's collection. The fact that a Hollywood superhero film could beat a Dharma and Red Chillies production in just three days is surprising in itself.

Starring Sidharth and Sonakshi, Ittefaq is a remake of the 1969 film by the same name which originally starred Rajesh Khanna and Nanda. While on the other side, Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Cate Blanchett (Hela) in the lead roles.
