A debt-ridden family from Tiruchendur approached the Collectorate here on Monday and sought to rescue them a usurer from the same locality.
In a petition submitted to Collector N. Venkatesh, T, Chandira, mother of Ravisivalingam, who is the victim of usury, said some lakhs of money was borrowed from money lender C. Balaji in 2015.
The money was lent at five % interest and in the same year Balaji along with his father Chandran had been threatening to kill the family members, if the borrowed money with interest was not paid, the petition said.
The moneylender allegedly harassed the borrower to pay ₹ 31 lakh. Frightened by the moneylender’s threat, Ravisivalingam approached his father Thirupuli, who was not aware of such incident, fell at his feet seeking help.
Conceding to the demand of the moneylender, Thirupuli agreed to offer his seven and a half cent land in the name of moneylender. But even after providing his lands, the moneylender continued to torture Ravisivalingam demanding more interest, Chandira said in the petition.
Ravisivalingam was paralysed by stroke as the moneylender harassed him relentlessly. Hence, the petition was submitted to Superintendent of Police, P. Mahendran.
