NWCDC will be held Dec. 6-8 in Las Vegas

Tower MSA Partners’ Chief Compliance Officer Daniel Anders, MSCC and Beth Savelli, risk manager of Swissport USA, will deliver a session on an aggressive approach to swiftly settling a portfolio of legacy claims at the National Workers’ Compensation & Disability Conference & Expo.

“A number of events can trigger the need for a legacy claim settlement initiative,” Anders said. “Mergers, acquisitions, a change in management, or sometimes just the sheer volume of old claims will prompt a payer to act.”

Anders and Savelli will present “Old Dogs, New Settlement Tricks” on Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. The session covers the components of a proactive settlement program, which include an analysis of cost drivers across a group of legacy claims to determine if immediate settlement is feasible or if interventions could optimize the claim. “Then, the goal is to match interventions, such drug utilization review, physician contact or physician peer review, or legal action, to the cases,” Anders said.

The presentation will share the experience of Swissport, an employer in a high-risk industry, which shrunk its open claims by one-third within eight months and reduced the amount of its average MSA from $72,712 to $28,857. “Perhaps more important, we took the lessons learned from the settlement process and incorporated them into our ongoing claims management,” Savelli said.

“Old Dogs, New Settlement Tricks” is part of the National Workers Compensation & Disability Conference, which will be held December 6 through 8 in Las Vegas. For more information, please see www.wcconference.com.
