MCC not to collect unsegregated waste from Nov 11

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will not pick up unsegregated waste from 60 wards from November 11. The corporation will also abstain from picking waste packed in plastic bags.

Though MCC had sent out similar warnings earlier, this time the civic body appears to be serious about it. Those who fail to segregate garbage and throw it in the open will be fined under the Municipal Act, said Mohammed Nazeer, MCC commissioner.

Pointing out need for waste segregation at source, he said Mangaluru is among the 27 urban local bodies identified in the state for Swachh Survekshan 2018. For positive survey and results, it's the need of the hour to segregate waste at source. Kitchen waste, non-vegetarian waste, tissue papers and plantain leaves should not be mixed with plastic covers, milk sachets, rubber, metals and other non-degradable materials. "People should make sure that there is wet and dry waste segregation," he said.

The MCC has also made it mandatory that a household handover the garbage personally to waste collecting vehicles. Residents, however, complain that garbage vehicles don't come to places convenient to citizens. In most of the areas, vehicles come after people in the homes have left for workplaces.

When asked, Nazeer pointed out that it won't be a problem. Citizens can keep the dry waste near their gates in buckets and wet waste can be collected on alternative days. "If small town municipalities like Moodabidri and Mulki can see 95% waste segregation at source, then why not a city with civilized and intelligent people," he questioned, adding that if there is issue of garbage vehicle reaching late in any area, it will be addressed by advancing the time," he said.

Nazeer warned that in case people fail to segregate garbage, then a fine ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 will be collected. Fines will also be imposed on those who dump garbage on vacant places or by the roadside.

Mayor Kavita Sanil said a meeting will be held with Antony Waste Handling Cell Pvt Ltd and officials of MCC on successful implementation of waste segregation at source.
