NOIDA: Nearly 1,000 residents from high-rise societies and nearby villages protested against the proposed waste-to-energy plant in Sector 123. The area is densely populated and setting up of such a plant will be hazardous for residents, animals and brids, the protesters said.

Hundreds of people from Ajnara Homes 121, Gaur Grandeur, Prateek Laurel and Eldeco Homes from Sector 117-122, apart from neighbouring villages like Behlolpur, Sarfabad, Sorkha, Parthala Khanjarpur and Ghari Chaukhandi protested at the CNG roundabout in Sector 123 from morning till evening, pressing the Noida Authority and the district administration to address their grievances.

The 25-acre proposed waste-to-energy site is just 175 metres from Ajnara Homes 121 and is separated by the proposed Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) Expressway.

We can just imagine having a Ghazipur-like dumping ground next to our homes. This will be a huge health hazard to people living in the neighbourhood. We will not allow the Noida Authority to ruin our lives. We can't afford this," said Anoopam Oberai, a resident of Sector 122.

The move comes after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) allowed the Noida Authority last week to set up a plant in the proposed plot within six months and shift all dumped garbage from a vacant plot in Sector 138 A to the new plant.

"The Authority thinks that the educated and professional people living in the neighbourhood would not protest against the issue. But we have launched a campaign - 'Dumping Virodh Abhiyan'. We have asked the Authority to shut this site in one week or face protest," Oberai said.

R C Singh, a resident of Homes 121, said, "We fully supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make our city clean. But its an irony that the Authority decided to dump the city's garbage in front of our homes."

Later some members of Samajwadi Party also joined the protest and echoed the residents' sentiments.

R S Yadav, project engineer, Noida Authority said the NGT guidelines and order will be followed in setting up the waste-to-energy plant. "Only notified areas shall be used for waste-to-energy plants. Noida Authority has two notified sites in Sector 123 and Sector 151 which can be used," he said.
