DEHRADUN: As veteran politician Narayan Dutt Tiwari battles for life in the ICU of a private hospital in Delhi, his son Rohit Shekhar told TOI that the former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand CM has not been responding to him or his mother Ujjwala Tiwari since Sunday afternoon.
Tiwari, who is fond of classical music, has responded to only few things since he was hospitalized after a brain stroke on September 20. Among them were the ragas sung by Shekhar and his mother.
"I am a trained classical singer and along with my mother we sang Raga Kedar and Raga Durga, which he is extremely fond of," Rohit said. However, to their surprise, the former CM - who was kept in a private room of the hospital - did not indicate anything on Sunday evening. "The doctors told us that he had extremely low blood pressure," said Shekhar.
On being asked about Tiwari's health, Rohit said that doctors were of the view that the next 72 hours were extremely important. "He is a strong man and we are hoping that his condition improves at the earliest," Rohit added.
Tiwari suffered a brain stroke and was rushed to a private hospital in Delhi's Saket on September 20. He was in the ICU of the hospital till October 12 and was moved to a private room when his health improved. The former CM was shifted back to the ICU on October 26. Around a week later, Tiwari was moved to a single room on November 2 and has been on life support since.
"Uttar Pradesh CM Adityanath and Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat along with a number of senior politicians have either visited the hospital or extended support to the family through telephone calls," said Rohit.
Congress spokesperson Mathura Dutt Joshi said, "Uttarakhand was carved out of UP in November 2000. In March 2002, Tiwari became the first elected chief minister of the hill state and laid the foundation for the overall growth of the newly carved state during his five-year tenure."
