NEW DELHI: Guwahati's BJP mayor said that starting today the entire staff of the city's municipal corporation will sing the national anthem every day at 10 am, reported ANI.
"Our duty towards citizens stems from our duty and love for the nation. So we have decided to do this from today," said Guwahati's mayor Mrigen Sarania.
Two months ago, a minister in Madhya Pradesh's BJP government "appealed" to all 'madrasas', or Islamic schools, to make students sing the national anthem daily to inculcate patriotism, reported ANI.
"Regular schools unfurl the Tricolour and sing the national anthem daily. I appeal to all madrasas in MP (Madhya Pradesh) to unfurl the Tricolour and sing the national anthem daily. I don't think anybody should have a problem with that. Nobody has.]," said the state's school education minister Vijay Shah.
The same minister also issued a directive to all private schools in Satna district, also in September, that they have students answer roll call with "jai Hind" rather than "Yes/No Ma'am/Sir", reported ANI.
"We hope they will adhere to it since it relates to patriotism," the minister said to ANI.
In August, the Bombay Municipal Corporation issued a notice making the singing of Vande Mataram compulsory in all BMC-run schools. And in July, the Madras High Court ruled that Vande Mataram be played in all educational institutions in Tamil Nadu at least once a week.
