Shopkeepers and chemists doing business around Gorakhpur’s B R D Medical College and Hospital on Monday alleged that they were assaulted by some medical students for not paying Rs 20,000 as “contribution” for an event. Following this, they had got an FIR lodged with the police.

Gorakhpur SSP Satyarthi Anirudh Pankaj said: “On Monday evening, some traders filed a complaint at Gulahariya police station that around 30 to 40 medical students had came to them seeking money for some event they were going to organise.”

“The traders were asked to pay around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000, which they said they would be unable to give. However, as a trade union, they reportedly offered to contribute some amount, but the students asked for more. An argument broke out, and the students allegedly manhandled the traders,” he added.

Later, an FIR was registered under sections 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC against unnamed medical students. “With the help of the traders, we are trying to identify the accused,” the SSP said.
