‘Not worried about finances as I am confident that my fans will fund it’

Actor Kamal Haasan on Sunday affirmed that he was committed to launching a political party.

At the 39th anniversary of his welfare association Kamal Haasan Narpani Iyakkam, the actor said he was not worried about finances to run his party as he was confident that his fans will fund it.

Addressing thousands of fans who had gathered at the event, Mr. Haasan said he would be launching a mobile app to help his fans keep track of funds donated by them and its use in party affairs. The app is set to be launched on November 7 on the occasion of his birthday.

Stating that he was not driven by curiosity or by the desire to enjoy power, Mr. Haasan said there was no need to wait for disaster to strike. “Let us not wait for tragedy to happen. We can prevent catastrophe. Let us start today,” he said.

Stating that his fan base had people from all walks of life — from daily wage labourers to small traders who are hanging between debt and daily survival — he said they have all donated for public welfare.

“If the rich, who comprise 2 % to 4% of the population have this mentality of donating for causes, then many problems will be solved. If the rich pay their taxes properly, most of the country’s problems will be solved to a great extent,” he said.
