PUNE: The chief executive officer (CEO) of a Pune-based mobile games company suffered part memory loss due to a severe head injury during his journey to the city on the Amravati-Pune Express train recently.

Rohit Gupta, CEO and founder of Rolocule Games, was searching for his laptop which had gone missing on the moving train. The next thing he remembers is lying near the tracks at the Ghorpadi railway station. While he cannot recollect how he landed there, his wife, Neha, believes he was attacked and pushed off the train by the thieves who took the laptop.

The Guptas and their three-year-old daughter, who live at Baner, were travelling in the air-conditioned compartment of the train on October 27. Speaking to TOI, Neha said, "We had two berths in the A2 coach. It was 7.20am and the train was set to reach Pune around 8.50am. I woke up first and told my husband that we would be reaching Pune shortly. He woke up but continued lying in his berth. I gave him my purse and went to the washroom. When I returned minutes later, I found Rohit's laptop bag missing."

Neha said she and Rohit began searching for the laptop. "He told me to wait in the seat and take care of our daughter while he looked around the compartment. When he didn't return after 10 minutes, I got worried and called him on his cellphone. The phone rang for a long time before he took it. However, he continued to remain silent. When he finally spoke, he began wondering why he was out of the train and near a railway station. He sounded confused and said he had a sharp pain in the head," she recalled.

Neha said that before making the call, she went around looking for Rohit and found two railway protection force (RPF) personnel in a different compartment. "When I told them about the theft and my husband having gone missing, they said they were only responsible for patrolling on the train and that I should lodge a complaint at the police station," she said.

During subsequent calls, Rohit told Neha that he had found out from passersby that he was near the Ghorpadi railway station. "I told him to wait there. By then the train had reached Pune and I got down with my daughter. I called up a friend who lives near Magarpatta, who left on his two-wheeler to Ghorpadi," Neha said.

The friend reached Ghorpadi station but couldn't locate Rohit. "I took both of them on a conference call and, after searching a lot, my friend found him near the railway tracks. The friend took Rohit to the RPF station at Ghorpadi. However, the personnel there just kept asking questions. With Rohit needing medical attention immediately, my friend brought him by rickshaw to the Pune railway station. We took an NOC from the police and got Rohit admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic. He is only just out of the ICU. The doctors have said that he was either hit or something was forcibly inserted in the back of his skull. The severe headaches he is experiencing will last for months," Neha said.

Neha lodged an FIR in connection with the incident on October 29 at the Pune railway station. However, she says she will file a supplementary complaint as she strongly suspects Rohit was attacked and pushed off the train.

Superintendent of police (GRP), Pune, Prabhakar Budhwant, told TOI that going by Neha's statement, a theft complaint has been registered. "However, I have issued directions to the local police station officials to investigate the case," he said.

Ruby Hall Clinic medical director Sanjay Pathare said, "Rohit sustained head injuries and is suffering from contusions. He was treated conservatively with medications and didn't require surgical intervention. He has recovered well and is likely to be discharged on Monday."
