SMC gets award for operating best city bus service in the country

Surat: Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has won an award from ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation (MOHUPA) for operating the best city bus service in the country. Municipal commissioner M Thennarasan received the award from minister of state (independent charge), housing and urban affairs, Government of India, Hardeep Singh Puri at the 10th Urban India Mobility Conference and Exhibition held in Hyderabad on Monday.


The SMC runs 275 city buses on 28 different routes, covering 85 per cent of urban area since launching the city bus service in November 2016. The passenger number has risen from 3,000 to 65,000 and the SMC's revenue, too, shot up from Rs 46,000 to Rs 6,00,000 daily.The ministry said that in Surat city the model shift of passengers from autorickshaw to city bus is about 86.91 per cent. At least 6.18 per cent of two-wheel passengers, 0.67 per cent of car users and nearly 5 per cent of other passengers have started using city buses. The SMC will be deploying another 300 city buses to add to its fleet to increase frequency and cover 100 per cent of urban area. tnn
