Tamil Nadu: First spell of North East monsoon nearing end

CHENNAI: The first spell of the Northeast monsoon rains, which battered the city and coastal districts for almost a week, is drawing to an end. The Meteorological department said that rains may reduce gradually in the coming days and only light spells of rains are expected in Chennai and coastal districts in the next 24 hours.
“There is a possibility of rains gradually reducing in the coming days,” said S B Thampi, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre.However, heavy rainfall is expected in Puducherry and the Cauvery delta regions in the next 24 hours and a few other parts in the State.
Readings on Sunday morning for a 24-hour period showed that Papanasam in Tirunelveli district recorded 14 cm, followed by Manimuthar and Nagapattinam at 12 cm, which clearly shows a drop in rainfall levels across the State. Nungambakkam recorded just 3 mm rainfall from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm, indicating that the worst of the first spell is over.
