VADODARA: M S University has received Rs eight crore from Gujarat government to develop the stinking stretch of 'bhukhi nullah' - tributary of Vishwamitri river that passes through the campus.
Officials said the state government had released the funds before the model code of conduct got implemented ahead of the upcoming assembly polls. The university had been trying to get funds for this project since five years.
The bhukhi nullah stretch that passes through the campus starts from behind the Polytechnic College campus, passes through the boys hostel campus, the old Faculty of Law building, the C C Mehta auditorium, new Vikram Baug, science faculty and fine arts faculty premises and at the end joins the Vishwamitri river near Kalaghoda.
"We were seeking funds from the state government so that we can construct retaining wall inside the nullah. Presently, due to flooding, retaining wall at some parts has got damaged leading to erosion of soil. Because the soil has got eroded, foundations of some buildings have opened up putting the structures of this buildings at risk," said university engineer N K Ojha.
"Our priority is to have a proper retaining wall constructed. At places, where the retaining wall does not exist, we will construct a new one while at those where the retaining wall exists, we will increase its height," said Ojha, adding that the surplus funds will be used to develop the space.
Earlier this year, the university had put up a railing, provided some lighting and cleared the muck around the low lying bridge over the nullah that connects the D N Hall ground to Faculty of Science. The university administration had come into action after a team of students of Department of Architecture voluntarily took up the task to make the space usable for all.
