Nagpur: The sound habit of wearing a helmet saved the life of 46-year-old Deepak Sahu but riding without helmet cost the life of pillion rider Bhojraj Gajbhiye. The duo were heading home on a bike when they met with an accident on Hingna road on Saturday.

Sahu and Gajbhiye, working at a printing press at MIDC Hingna, had suffered a fall after their bike skidded trying to save a cyclist. Police said Sahu had to apply sudden brake as the cyclist had come in front of his bike. The abrupt application of the brake was so drastic that Sahu lost control of the two-wheeler and it skidded.

A mini load carrier, coming from behind, hit Sahu and Gajbhiye. Sahu made a miraculous escape despite being dragged on the roadby the mini truck. Gajbhiye's head came under the rear wheels of the truck leading to his death. They were rushed to Government medical college and hospital where Gajbhiye was declared brought dead. Gajbhiye's post-mortem was performed on Sunday. MIDC police have registered an offence of causing death due to negligence against the driver of the mini truck.
