Divisional Railway Manager, Madurai, Neenu Ittyerah, held a comprehensive discussion with Collector N. Venkatesh on Saturday on acquiring land for laying new railway line between Thoothukudi and Madurai via Aruppukottai.
As the Union Government has proposed to form new railway line between Thoothkudi and Madurai via Aruppukottai in addition to the existing Madurai – Kovilpatti – Sattur – Virudhunagar – Madurai section, it has been decided to execute the project in three phases.
After covering the Meelavittaan – Mela Marudhur stretch in the first phase, railway track will be laid between Mela Marudhur and Aruppukottai in the second phase. The Aruppukottai – Madurai stretch will be covered in the last and final phase.
Acquisition of 71 hectares of private land and 3.77 hectares of government land has to be done in Saaminaththam, Sillaanaththam, Vaalasamudhram, South Veerapandiapuram, Mela Marudhur and Vadakku Silukkanpatti villages for the implementation of the first phase of the project.
Executive Engineer, Madurai Division, Chandru, Assistant Executive Engineer, Dhanaraman, and Assistant Engineer, Muthukumar, were present.
