Udhagamandalam: The body of a 30-year-old man was found floating in the Avalanche dam in the Nilgiris on late Saturday evening. Police retrieved the body and sent it to the Ooty Government Hospital for post-mortem.
The deceased was identified as A Ramachandran of Velachery in Chennai. According to Emerald police sub-inspector Paul Ravikumar, Ramachandran had left home on October 30 without informing his family.
"Ramachandran was running at least four jewellery shops in Chennai. He had collected Rs 7,200 each from his customers amounting to the tune of Rs 72 lakh. He had promised 10 grams of silver, 2 grams of gold and 50 items of provisions to each customer. However, he could not keep his promise. As pressure mounted, he left the city without even informing his family," Ravikumar told TOI.
"The body was 3-4 days old. It is a case of suicide. The family of the deceased was informed. They also confirmed the identity of the body," the police officer added.
The body was handed over to the family members after postmortem on Sunday evening.
A case has been registered at the Emerald police station.
