It is marginally higher than one-fifth of the total capacity of the reservoirs

The increase in the storage of city’s reservoirs in a day has yielded water sufficient to meet nearly two weeks’ requirements.

As per the readings of the reservoirs taken this morning, the storage of Chembarambakkam, Cholavaram, Red Hills and the Satyamurti Sagar in Poondi stood by 358 million cubic feet (mcft).

Taking Chennai’s daily water requirements as 830 million litres a day (MLD), the increase in the storage can absorb the demand for 16 days, even after considering evaporation loss.

On Saturday morning, the combined storage of the four reservoirs stood at 2,474 mcft, almost double that of the four waterbodies on the corresponding day last year. Yet, the current storage is marginally higher than one-fifth of the total capacity of the reservoirs, which is 11,057 mcft. Red Hills and Chembarambakkam recorded inflows of the order of 1,600 cubic feet per second (cusecs) to 1,700 cusecs, while the other two saw moderate inflows — varying between 380 cusecs and 590 cusecs.

Other reservoirs in the State were virtually left untouched by the current rain spell that has been benefited some of the coastal districts, including Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Chennai.

Storage in Mettur

The storage of Mettur and Bhavanisagar dams, on Saturday morning, stood at about 47,000 mcft and 13,800 mcft respectively.
