Despite NU prohibition, exam centres continue to charge for parking

Nagpur: Though the Nagpur University has prohibited examination centres from charging for two-wheeler parking, students are being forced to cough up the charges at several colleges in the city.

Many students had last week approached TOI complaining about the illegal parking fee being charged from them during the ongoing winter exams.

Last year, NU had ordered all exam centres not to charge any parking fee from students during exam time following strong protest from ABVP, yet the loot continues. In fact, to ensure awareness among students, the hall tickets being issued by the university too clearly mention no parking fee should be charged from examinees.

Vikramjeet Kalane, secretary of ABVP pleaded ignorance about students' complaints. "VC had assured us and it is being mentioned on the hall tickets that no fee has to be paid. So far, nobody has come to us with any such complain. Still, we will pose as students and check first if parking fee is being collected at exam centres," he said.

Aniket Agrawal, a student whose exam centre is Institute of Science, told TOI that the private contractors were smartly fleecing examinees. "They insist parking fee has to be paid. If you refuse, they make it optional but also disown any responsibility for damage to our vehicles. Students, are already under exam pressure, pay up fearing their vehicles would be damaged. Many thought no point in bickering for Rs10 and paid up just to ensure our vehicles remain safe," he said.

NSUI president Ajit Singh said they were already approached by some students and they had taken them to the vice-chancellor's office on Tuesday. "VC was on leave. But we gave a written complaint against the parking contractors and exam centres where parking fee is being charged. We have warned that if this doesn't stop the college principal will be responsible for the consequences the operators would face," Singh said.

He added, "Operators at two exam centres — Institute of Science and Ambedkar College Deekshabhoomi — were charging fee and taking advantage of students' innocence."

Examination in-charge at both the colleges couldn't be contacted. Vice-chancellor SP Kane was not available for comments.
