UT Police yet to get new notes in exchange for scrapped notes

The SLP was filed by the Chandigarh Police when the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the police authorities to return the seized currency to its claimants in the shape of newly introduced notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000.

THE CHANDIGARH Police is yet to get new currency notes in exchange for Rs 3.32 crore it deposited in the shape of demonetised notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in the state treasury. The police were instructed to submit all seized currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 in the state treasury. Inspector Narinder Patial, nodal officer to deal with demonetised notes, said, “We are yet to get new currency notes in exchange for old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, which were seized during investigation of different criminal cases. We also filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court in connection with demonetisation.”

The SLP was filed by the Chandigarh Police when the Punjab and Haryana High Court had directed the police authorities to return the seized currency to its claimants in the shape of newly introduced notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2,000. The High Court had issued the orders in April this year while the SLP was filed in September.
