Coimbatore: Days after the Muthanankulam bund caved in on Friday, exposing the city corporation's failure to set up retaining walls around lakes, the civic body has commenced work on strengthening the tank bund at a cost of Rs 13 lakh.
The corporation has also sent a notice to a woman asking her to pay compensation for unauthorised construction along the bund which resulted in the cave-in.
"We have begun constructing the wall that will be 40ft long, 4ft wide on the lake side and 2ft wide near the road," said Saravana Kumar, executive engineer (in-charge) for west zone. The total estimate is pegged at Rs 13 lakh.
Saravana Kumar said the restoration work might be delayed due to rain. "Our plan was to complete the work within three days. But it may be delayed due to rain. We are now pouring concrete as part of setting up the wall. The road is also being relaid," he said.
Meanwhile, the corporation has issued a notice to Kavitha, 49, wife of Palanisamy, for digging the land near the tank bund to construct a compound wall on Friday. "Though it was a private land, it was an unauthorised construction as she did not take any permission from the corporation. The bund developed crack and began to cave in after sand was dug out 10ft deep near it. We have asked her to pay for the damage," said a corporation official.
The civic body has also lodged a case with the Selvapuram police station against her. Town planning wing officials said notices were also being issued to other unauthorised constructions. "We will take stringent action against all erring landowners," the officials said.
In March, the city corporation had quoted Rs 2 crore for bund strengthening and invited tenders for the same. "We had built retaining walls that too where cracks had developed. We will construct the remaining structures under the Smart City project," said a junior engineer with the corporation.
Corporation officials, meanwhile, have temporarily banned heavy vehicles entering the road. "We will implement it permanently in the future," said a senior official.
