A slew of SMEs ranging have benefited from Google's training programmes.
BENGALURU: In 2015, 40-year-old Arpita Ganesh launched her online boutique, Buttercups which makes customisable lingerie for women.

As a newly incorporated online business, the founder soon realised that the only way to maximise the online outreach was to have more efficient online campaigns.

"Though our website is built on Google business, we only had a rudimentary understanding of the various tools available on Google which we could leverage on," said Ganesh, founder of online lingerie store Buttercups.

Over the next few months, "we had our team attended digital training workshops on Adwords and other webinars conducted by Google to get better with the tools," Ganesh said.

"The results were massive". Today, almost 90 per cent of Buttercup's customers are through digital outreach and the online presence has resulted in a 13X increase in revenue. "We have grown 200 per cent in 10 months through the use of Google services, primarily Adwords, Analytics and Google business," Ganesh said.

"Google maps as a search tool is up 20 per cent month-onmonth for our lingerie experience center".

Not just apparel companies, but a slew of other small and medium businesses (SMB) ranging from healthcare and education to publishing and manufacturing firms have benefited from Google's training programmes.

Aimed at empowering SMBs with essential digital skills, Google has trained over 500,000 individuals since their announcement in January. Through a recently launched Google My Business programme, 1,20,000 businesses have created websites.

Digital Unlocked, a mix of online, offline and mobile training programme, has modules as simple as how to create an email ID to getting an online presence on Google Search, self-paced video tutorials offering certification programmes on Adwords, analytics, Search Engine Marketing, display marketing, SEOs and the like.

"In the past five months, over 440,000 individuals have engaged with Google's skilling platform and 20,000 businesses are now certified," Shalini Girish, director, Google Marketing Solutions. "This has helped a multitude of SMBs build their online presence and increase revenues".

Take the case of Astra concrete, a company that manufactures and exports concrete spacers. The Goa-based company started using Google Adwords, sites and maps when it wanted to reach beyond the shores.

"Today 60 per cent of revenue comes from abroad, 30 per cent from other states in India and only 10 per cent comes from Goa," said Shrikant Parulekar of Astra concrete.
