NOIDA: A 25-year-old Dalit woman has filed a case against her husband and in-laws alleging caste discrimination and dowry harassment. The woman, Shikha, a resident of Kendriya Vihar in Sector 51, got married to Deepak Sharma of Prahaladpur in Delhi in June 2013.

Shikha belongs to Jatav caste while her husband is a Brahmin. She said her family members had informed her in-laws before the wedding that they belong to Jatav caste (Scheduled Caste). "My husband and in-laws agreed and then we got married," she said in the complaint. The woman's father is a former plant protection adviser to the Union government.

The woman said her family spent a lot of money for the marriage. "We gave them jewellery, fridge, TV and furniture," she said. But her in-laws started demanding more money as dowry since her husband was unemployed. The in-laws started domestic violence and harassment when the demands were not met. Deepak's father Amarnath Sharma however denies any allegations of harassment.

Anju Teotia, SHO, women's police station, said a case has been registered against Deepak and his parents Amarnath Sharma and Geeta Sharma for subjecting the complainant to cruelty, voluntarily causing hurt and criminal breach of trust under different Sections 498A, 323, 406, of IPC, and Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and also under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
