Slight nip in the air, but it could change

PANAJI: Nights are getting colder and days are getting warmer. A nip in the air is noticeable after dusk till sunrise these days, thanks to a dip in temperature of two to three degrees. But days continue to hot and humid, thanks to a rise in temperature by a degree more than normal.

Meteorologists attribute it to normal conditions which prevail during the first few weeks of mild winter in Goa. "The skies used to be cloudy at night, but as they are clear now, the heat from land escapes upwards without hindrance," said Rahul M, scientist, India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji.

On Saturday morning, the IMD at Altinho recorded a minimum temperature of 21.5 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal. After IMD recorded 23 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the mercury has been going down and hovering around 21 degrees Celsius.

While the weather is pleasant during night hours and early morning, the heat causes some discomfort during noon and afternoon, though the maximum temperature a degree above normal is considered within normal range. The met centre has noted that the mercury hovers at around 34 degrees Celsius these days.

"The skies are clear during day time and sunny conditions prevail; these cause a slight rise in temperature," Rahul said.

Meteorologists are keenly watching the likelihood of light rain after about four days. "The models are showing light rainfall, but as of now, it is a possibility," Rahul said.
