TIRUPUR: The state government has failed to construct dams across Anamalaiaru and Nallaru rivers in Western Ghats even after (almost) 60 years since the Parambikulam-Aliyar Project (PAP) came into existence, said DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth.

Addressing a protest against the state government for its negligence at Udumalpet on Sunday, Premalatha said, "In 1958, former chief minister K Kamaraj joined hands with Kerala's former CM EMS Namboodiripad and constructed nine dams under the PAP scheme in order to tap water resources in the Western Ghats."

"As part of the PAP scheme, the government had planned to construct dams across Anamalaiaru and Nallaru rivers too. But it was never executed even after six decades. The PAP scheme, under which about 4 lakh acres are being irrigated, does not supply enough water," said Premalatha.

"The government which was supposed to establish one of the dams in Anamalaiaru river in Idli Mountain has been eating idlis," she added as she took dig at the AIADMK government.

DMDK president Vijayakanth, who spoke only for few minutes, said, "I will continue to protest against constructions of these two dams, for which the people should give their support. The government which does not bother about sufferings of farmers is nothing but dead."

Premalatha said, "Without concentrating on welfare schemes, the government is busy in establishing Tasmac shops." She also alleged that the government is a proxy-government. This year, the government allotted Rs 400 crore for Kudimaramathu scheme to desilt irrigation tanks across the state. But there were irregularities in the scheme and the government has swindled the money. So, it should publish white paper on the scheme, she demanded.

She said the GST has affected all sections of the people. The day of dethroning the BJP-led government in the Centre is not so far, she added.
