Residents’ welfare associations of apartments and gated communities will incur the wrath of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation if they fail to segregate dry and wet waste from December onwards.
GVMC as per solid waste management guidelines issued by the Central Government and Central Pollution Control Board has to recycle dry waste and use wet garbage (organic waste) as compost.
“We are explaining the importance to the residents’ welfare associations. If they fail to heed to our advice, we will be constrained to take stringent action against them as per rules,” GVMC Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan told reporters on Saturday.
A notice was issued to GVMC sometime ago on enforcement of solid waste management rules. “Those who produce waste should also take up the responsibility to segregate at the source,” he said. Bulk waste of over 100 kg should be used for composting. The municipal council has already adopted a resolution to this effect long ago.
For commercial establishments, GVMC has issued notices. If required Mr. Hari Narayanan said they would cancel their licences.
The city is generating on an average 1,000 tonnes of waste per day out of which 30% is wet waste. At present, only 105 tonnes is being segregated at source causing inconvenience to GVMC sanitary workers.
