Surat: Two groups of residents belonging to same community in Saiyedpura of Chowk Bazaar clashed with each other over a petty issue here on Saturday. They pelted stones and glass bottles at each other, which left at least 15 people from both the groups injured.
The groups from the neighbouring localities clashed over an old dispute. Police reached the spot as soon as stone pelting began and brought the situation under control. Police investigation revealed that residents of a locality were busy with a marriage function in their lane. There was an argument between an invitee at the marriage with someone from the neighbouring lane, which snowballed and the clash began.
Police carried out a preliminary inquiry and have started the process to register a complaint of rioting against both the groups at Chowk Bazaar police station. They are registering statements of local residents to find out what actually had led to stone pelting. Police are yet to make any arrest, but it could happen once the complaint is registered. "We have identified a few suspects who were involved in rioting, but they would be arrested after registration of the complaint only," the police said.
Meanwhile, two complaints of rioting were registered at Sachin GIDC police station on Friday. Two groups clashed with each other on Thursday night over a dispute with regard to non-payment of rent of Rs 2,000. Members of one group attacked the other with sticks. Police registered complaints of both the groups and arrested 14 people who were involved in rioting.
"Both the groups fought with each other over a money dispute that took place between them recently. We have arrested the accused who were involved in rioting," the police said.
