Panaji: The sessions court on Saturday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against mining trader and Kerala resident Philip Jacob, accused for theft of iron ore between 2007 and 2011.
Jacob, who was arrested in July this year, was later granted conditional bail, which included reporting before the special investigation team (SIT) probing the multi-crore mining scam. He was also asked not to leave the state without permission.
Special public prosecutor G D Kirtani, appearing for the SIT, told STOI that the team had moved for cancellation of the bail granted to Jacob as he had violated some conditions. Jacob had also not appeared before the court during the hearing.
An officer associated with the SIT said Jacob had left for Kerala soon after he was granted bail, thereby defying the court's directives.
Police said that so far, investigations have revealed that different mining leaseholders/companies in Goa were aware that Jacob was not a registered trader with the state's mines department, and had utilised him to trade their unaccounted iron ore in order to evade paying compulsory government dues, thereby committing an act of theft and causing the state exchequer losses to the tune of crores of rupees.
