Zero waste practices and principles will be enforced for the India-New Zealand T20 international match scheduled at the Sports Hub, Thiruvananthapuram, on November 7.

A decision to adopt the Zero Waste concept instead of the Green Protocol was reached between the City Corporation, District administration, Suchitwa Mission and Kerala Cricket Association (KCA).

The Zero Waste concept is being adopted as the Green Protocol cannot be fully implemented owing to security reasons and BCCI’s contract with the company that will supply packaged drinking water in the stadium, Mayor V.K. Prasanth told a press conference here on Friday.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) as per Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 will also implemented. “This is the first time that EPR is being implemented for a sports event in India”, Mithra T., executive director, Suchitwa Mission, said. The company has agreed to dispose of used pet bottles after the match.

The city Corporation has made arrangements for eco-friendly packaging of food items. Twenty food counters will be set up in the stadium. The civic body has decided to utilise the services of 20 supervisors and 40 employees. The Corporation will ensure that the company honours the EPR agreement.

A ‘T-Twenty for Tree Twenty’ campaign will also be launched as part of the match by the City Corporation and the Technopark-based NGO Prakriti.

Twenty celebrities will plant 20 saplings around the stadium and Technopark campus on November 5, the Mayor said.
