The Congress is trying its hand at an “auspicious” strategy to win over the women of Karnataka.

It’s women’s wing plans to present a sapling of tulsi, regarded auspicious by devout Hindus, along with turmeric and vermilion during its house-to-house poll campaign. “The idea of presenting them has been approved by KPCC president G. Parameshwara and General Secretary of AICC and Karnataka in-charge K.C. Venugopal,” said Laxmi Hebbalkar, president, Women’s Wing of KPCC.

“For one month, women workers will visit houses and present these while also reaching out programmes launched by the Congress over the years for the upliftment of women,” she said.

“Tulsi is sacred for its restorative and spiritual properties. It has special significance in the scriptures. It is a symbol of purity,” said Ms. Hebbalkar, explaining why they decided on presenting the tulsi plant.” She added that it was Mr. Parameshwara who advised them to present this.

The women’s wing presented a sapling of tulsi to Mr. Parameshwara during the working committee meeting here on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, speaking on women’s reservation, Mr. Parameshwara said: “Congress is in favour of reservation for women in politics. The party is ready to offer 33% reservation in allocation of ticket but they have to ask for ticket and be confident of victory in the polls.”
