Former Palasa MLA Juttu Jagannaikulu (58) died at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.
He is survived by wife and three daughters.
He was undergoing treatment for the last few months as both his kidneys failed.
As Mr. Jagannaikulu was financially drained following continuous treatment, YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy provided him ₹15 lakh to meet the hospital expenses.
Mr. Jagannaikulu, a follower of former Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao, was defeated in the 2004 elections. He was elected to the Assembly in 2009 on Congress ticket. He later joined the YSRCP and was made in charge of Palasa.
Several leaders, including Mr. Prasada Rao, expressed shock over the demise of Mr. Jagannaikulu.
They said the death of Mr. Jagannaikulu showed how serious the disease turned out to be in the district. Over 10,000 people succumbed to the kidney problem in the Uddanam region, they said. The last rites would be performed at his native village Bidimi near Palasa on Sunday.
In a press release, Minister K. Atchannaidu lauded the services of Mr. Jagannaikulu to the fishermen community.
