Row over sharing profits turns violent

A hotel in Cotton Green in the city was witness to a tragic drama on Friday.

Police officers turned up at Rajdoot Hotel in the afternoon to apprehend a man who called up the police control room to confess that he had killed his girlfriend in Room 110.

The Kalachowki police said Irshad Qureshi (23) checked into the hotel with his girlfriend Shahnaz Sheikh (28) on Friday. Senior Police Inspector Dilip Ugale said, “Qureshi called up the police control room and told the personnel that he had committed a murder. The information was passed on to us and we sent a team to the spot.”

When the police entered the room, the accused was calmly waiting to be arrested with his girlfriend’s body lying beside him. Sheikh was rushed to KEM Hospital where she was declared dead before admission. Doctors confirmed that Sheikh died due to asphyxiation. Qureshi was placed under arrest at 1.50 p.m.

Mr. Ugale said, “Both Qureshi and Sheikh were Mumbai residents and partners in a clothing business. They had been seeing each other for a year, but had frequent arguments in the past few months over their share of profits. They finally decided to meet at the hotel to settle the issue.”

The police said that Sheikh had refused to share the profits of the business with Qureshi. An argument broke out over the issue in the hotel room on Friday and Queshi in a fit of anger strangled Sheikh to death.

Mr. Ugale said, “Sheikh first removed her stole and threatened to strangle Qureshi to death. A furious Qureshi then seized the stole, wrapped it around her neck and strangled her till she dropped dead.”

Qureshi has been charged with murder under the Indian Penal Code. The police are conducting further inquiries into the case.
