Surat: A 42-year-old woman was allegedly thrashed and kidnapped by family members of a BJP municipal councillor here on Thursday. The accused family was booked at Rander police station on Saturday after senior police officials were approached by the woman.

The complainant woman has been arrested 14 times in the past on bootlegging charges and again on Thursday for carrying 24 bottles of liquor. She was allegedly thrashed by the family members of Pravin Kahar, councillor from ward 20 — Soni Faliya, Nanpura, Athwa.

Eleven people, including Kahar, were booked at Rander police station for thrashing, rioting and kidnapping the complainant woman, who is a resident of Nanpura. She was thrashed at an apartment in Rander after Kahar family had allegedly caught her with one of their relatives. The family members then took her to Kahar's office in Nanpura when local police were alerted and she was rescued. Kahar's daughter lodged a complaint against her husband Jayesh and the woman. Police recovered 24 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) from the apartment where she was caught by the family members.

Police arrested her for bootlegging on Thursday, but she was released on bail by court on Friday. Meanwhile, she approached the city police commissioner and submitted a written application, demanding that Kahar family and others be booked for thrashing her.

"Thrashing any woman in public is a serious case. Police have registered a complaint and taking necessary action against those involved," deputy commissioner of police, Zone IV, Leena Patil said.
