Divided by caste, poultry farm workers clash with each other

Coimbatore: Casteism came to the fore as the employees of a poultry farm at Kullichettipalayam on the outskirts of the city on Friday night divided into two groups and clashed with each other for playing songs praising their caste.

Four dalits were injured in the incident. Police have arrested two persons belonging to Other Backward Class (OBC) community in connection with the case.

According to the police, Siva poultry farm at Kullichettipalayam had employed six dalit families and four OBC community families and they were provided quarters near the poultry.

On Friday night, OBC members played movie songs that had reference to their caste. The dalits too started playing songs about their community, fuelling tension. Four dalits were assaulted by OBC members and they were admitted to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and Pollachi government hospital.

The injured were identified as K Karuppu, 40, M Kalimuthu, 30, his younger brother M Sadayandi and R Sundarraj, 31, all hailing from Attur in Dindigul district.


The Kinathukadavu police have arrested P Senthilkumar, 24, and V Chinnadurai, 33, both from Thoothukudi district, in connection with the case. "Senthilkumar and Chinndaurai were consuming alcohol near the quarters when dalits played the song. Irked, the duo assaulted them with sickle and iron rod, injuring four," the police said.


Based on the victim's complaints, the Kinathukadavu police have registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Senthilkumar and Chinnathurai were on Saturday produced before a local court which remanded them in judicial custody.


According to the police, the two communities had picked up a similar quarrel two months ago. The issue was settled amicably then.
