Days after a woman delivered a girl in Amravati where her parents live, she has filed a complaint with the police that her husband and five other family members had gone “missing” from their home in Arnala in Thane. The last time she met them was in mid-October when they visited Amravati to see the newborn.

The police, however, suspect that the family may have deliberately cut off contact with her after she delivered a girl child.

Sangeeta Sharma, who had been living with her husband Varun Sharma in Arnala, had gone to her parents’ home in Amravati last month for the delivery. In her complaint, she said that in mid-October, her husband, his parents, brother, sister-in-law and niece, had visited her and her newborn daughter. They left for Aranala on October 13, the police said.

However, since October 14, all her attempts to contact her husband proved unsuccessful. Keshav Naik, senior inspector, Arnala police station, said that the family had left for Nashik on October 14 for the funeral of a relative.

“All their cellphones have been switched off since then. When Sangeeta Sharma could not get in touch with them, she filed a complaint,” he said.

The police are attempting to ascertain the family’s location based on the last phone activity. “After returning to Arnala, the family stopped communicating with Sangeeta. We do not know whether it is because they do not want to keep in touch with her,” Naik said.

A senior police official said that the police are investigating whether the Sharma family has deliberately cut off ties with Sangeeta after the birth of her daughter. “It is not a missing case in the sense that there is some foul play involved or that they have met with an accident,” he said.
