PORVORIM: Families from the Dhangar community displaced by the under-construction Mopa international airport will be rehabilitated by the state government at Cansarvornem, in Pernem, with each family being given land and a 100 sq m home, chief minister Manohar Parrikar said on Friday.

In keeping with the concessionaire agreement inked between the airport operator and the state government, 15 men were also given employment offer letters at the hands of the chief minister.

GMR Goa International Airport Limited handed over the appointment letters and rehabilitation packages to one member from each of the 15 families who hail from the Dangar community and who have been displaced by the mega project. Most of the jobs given to the men are in the unskilled and semi-skilled sector with just three men being appointed as technician, driver and assistant. The rehabilitation package entitles each family to 800 sq m land in which a constructed house and animal shed would be built. The rehabilitation package also includes the construction of a community hall with capacity for 150 people and a crematorium.

The government has also sanctioned the necessary public amenities such as water supply, electricity and approach roads. "If you see, most of the jobs are in the unskilled segment and that is because these men are not skilled. We will upgrade the Pernem ITI so that skills required for the airport can be imparted," Parrikar said.

Addressing the 15 men and other members of the Dangar community, Parrikar said that once the airport came up, it would create tremendous economic growth and provide employment opportunities to those who live in the vicinity. The rehabilitation package is being implemented at a cost of `6.33 crore by GMR Airports on a nomination basis based on estimates prepared by PWD. Tourism minister and Pernem MLA Manohar Azgaonkar was also present when the rehabilitation package and employment letters were issued. "This will end unemployment in the region. These men will get `20,000 to `25,000 per month and on permanent basis," Azgaonkar said.
