More wet spells forecast for T.N., Puducherry

After a heavy downpour on Thursday night that threw normal life out of gear, residents of Chennai were in for another night of intense rainfall on Friday, though the earlier part of the day remained relatively rain-free.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted more rains for coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Monday.

“The low pressure area lying over south west Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coast is likely to bring rain or thundershowers to most places over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” said S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre in Chennai on Friday.

The forecast is heavy and very heavy rainfall for a few places. The same low pressure area was responsible for Thursday night’s deluge and the DGP office station recorded 30 cm of rainfall in a few hours. At other places in the city, the rain gauge showed rainfall levels between 8 cm and 20 cm. Between 8.30 a.m. and 11.30 p.m. on Friday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 6 cm of rainfall each.

Dies in wall collapse

Razia (61) was killed as the wall of her house in Ennore, north Chennai, came crashing down. As a precautionary step, officials switched off power supply to many areas on Thursday soon after heavy rain began, after two girls were electrocuted in the city on Wednesday night.
