Day 5: Torrential overnight rains hit Chennai after sunny morning on Friday

CHENNAI: After a day of sunshine on Friday, the 4th of November, the skies opened up yet again late in the evening, with 55 mm rain recorded around 10 pm at Nungambakkam here. “Within three days, Chennai received a whopping 36 cm rain. Steps have been taken to clear the stagnating water immediately,” Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said after visiting a few places in the city.
Media reports say that at least twelve people have died in rain-related incidents in the state since October 27, when the northeast monsoon set in. A farmer was electrocuted in Thiruvarur in southern Tamil Nadu on Friday.
The Met office on Friday predicted that rain would continue for at least the next two days. School holiday has been extended by one more day.

Hours after Chennai received its heaviest rainfall for November in 41 years on Thursday night, the city was up on its feet because of overnight mitigation by an army of Corporation officials. The government pulled out all stops with the CM leading from the front and ministers joining the task force.

6:00 PM: Marina beach turns into a sea as rain waters remain stagnant after Thursday night rains. Beach vendors lose business. Meanwhile, stagnated water on the sands attracted families with kids to the beach.
5:40 PM: The water crisis faced by the city has been resolved partially as the combined water level in the four reservoirs rose to two thousand million cubic feet (2TMC ft).
5:00 PM: Power supply was crippled in low lying areas as 128 feeder services of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) were switched off to ensure safety of residents due to heavy rain that lashed the city on Thursday night.
4:30 PM: Operations of southbound Express trains and suburban trains in Chennai Egmore Chengalpattu section were severely affected on Thursday and Friday as rain water inundated railway tracks at several places between Chengalpattu and Guindy station.
4:15 PM: Sea at the Marina has turned black since this morning; Experts say its due to the sewage water from the Cooum and Adyar Rivers.
3:45 PM: According to a Skymet report, a low-pressure area which is over Sri Lanka and adjoining Coast has triggered the non-stop rainfall over Chennai.

3:15 PM: Tamil Nadu Weatherman on his official Facebook post has informed that Chennai will see breaks in the rains which will return in the night. He further says that the DGP Office on Marina-Mylapore route has recorded 300 mm of rainfall.

2:10 PM: Massive waterlogging has been reported in parts of Tamil Nadu followed by heavy rainfall. A local from Chennai's Sunnambu Kolathur area told ANI, "We're facing a tough situation; moreover this happens every year. The government has to take steps towards betterment."

12:50 PM: Incessant heavy rains lashed Nagapattinam district for the fifth consecutive day today, inundating hundreds of houses and submerging paddy crops in thousands of hectares. 12:00 PM: While heavy waterlogging hindered free movement of vehicles, a "signalling snag," hit train services between the St Thomas Mount and Kodambakkam suburban section since 9.30 pm. Services were restored at 3.20 am today, Railway officials said.

10:45 AM: No major disruption in train services. All flight services are normal, according to reports.
10:15 AM: According to news reports, Anna University has indefinitely postponed its semester exams.
The exams for the University of Madras and its constituent colleges are postponed to due to rain. Ethiraj College for Women and Loyola College has also postponed its semester exam for the day, reports The Hindu.

10:00 AM: The TN chief Minister has informed that in case of flooding in the coastal districts, there are about 115 rescue camps are set up with provisions for food, water and other necessary articles.
Ministers have been appointed to oversee the relief work.

9:15 AM: According to the IMD bulletin released at 8 am this morning, heavy to very rain is expected at isolated places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The bulletin further informs that the region is very likely to receive thunderstorm accompanied with lightning.
9:00 AM: Severe waterlogging has been witnessed in several areas across the city. Kovilambakkam, Valluvar Kotam to name a few.

8:20 AM: There's no traffic from Koyambedu to Ethiraj Salai all through Nelson Manickam Road, Sterling Road and College road.

8:15 AM: According to some of the commuters, traffic was moving via Nelson Manickam road subway near Loyola College in city's Nungambakkam area. The Sterling Road to ahead of College Road, however, is flooded.
8:00 AM: Around six subways across the city have been shut down because of inundated roads.

7:30 AM: The state govt around midnight requested all private institutions in Chennai and Kancheepuram to announce leave on Friday. Even the private companies have been asked to declare a holiday today.
Experts say rains last night were the heaviest spell since December 1, 2015. Though a major part of the day remained sunny and dry, rainfall activity picked up from 6 pm and shifted gears, and by 10 pm, the Nungambakkam weather station has recorded a whopping 120 mm of rainfall.
The Met office has attributed the spike in rainfall to a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.
